Abstract
1,012,005. Insulating cable joints. PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd. March 11, 1964 [June 25, 1963], No. 25242/63. Heading H2E. An electrical cable joint is insulated by forming an envelope of flexible sheet material around the joint, filling the envelope with a thixotropic resin mix containing a hardener and deforming the envelope so that pressure is applied to the resin to force the resin into the joint. Two cables 1, 2 (Fig. 4) are coaxially connected and wrapped in either a dry or a resin impregnated meshed tape in the region of the joint. A generally rectangular synthetic resin sheet which is then provided to envelope the wrapped joint and which may consist of a synthetic resin layer laminated with a metal foil is, after being secured along its side edges to the cables by self-adhesive tape 9, folded as at 7 and creased as at 8 to form an envelope with a mouth 10 (Fig. 5) through which the envelope is filled with resin. The top edges of the sheet are subsequently folded over and rolled towards the cables in order to force the resin into the interstices of the wrapped insulation surrounding the joint. Alternatively, pressure may be applied to the resin by tightly wrapping the envelope around the joint. The pressure is then released in order to allow the resin to harden and set and the cable joint is completed by wrapping it in a self-adhesive synthetic insulating tape. The thixotropic resin may be of the epoxy type and need not be of the same material as the cable sheath. Specification 1,003,415 is referred to.
