Abstract

907,950. Thin-wire electroplating. ULTRA ELECTRONICS Ltd. July 21, 1961 [July 15, 1960], No. 24693/60. Class 41. A method of electroplating thin wire e.g. copper wire of diameter 0.001 inch, consists in maintaining the wire in tension and rotating it while being sprayed with an electrolyte from a nozzle or jet maintained at a suitable potential relative to that of the wire. The apparatus comprises a small lathe with driven pin chucks, 2a and 2b, between which the wire 1 is held in tension by the spring 3. The moving jet 7 containing the electrolyte 8 houses the anode 12 and is secured by a holder 9 to a threaded screw 10 driven by motor 11 having means for reversing. The jet sprays electrolyte on to the rotating wire. The reversing device is adjustable so that, if necessary, specific areas of the wire only can be plated. Very fine wires can be plated evenly both longitudinally and transversely: because of constant agitation and replenishment of the electrolyte at the wire surface much higher current densities and hence much faster plating rates can be achieved.
