Abstract
Impure lactic acid solution containing calcium ions is purified by treating the solution with an ion-exchange resin which replaces the calcium ions with hydrogen, sodium or potassium ions. The process is particularly useful for treating lactic acid, obtained by the bacterial fermentation of a steep containing glucose, sucrose or invert sugar with the addition of barley meal or other material adapted to supply nitrogen for the formation of bacterial protein, which has been neutralised by limestone. The liquid resulting from the fermentation contains calcium lactate and inorganic and organic impurities, e.g. amino acids. Some of these impurities may be removed by treatment of the mixture with milk of lime and filtering. Most of the calcium ions may be removed by treating the solution with sulphuric acid and filtering off the calcium sulphate formed. The resulting solution is treated with an ion exchange resin, preferably sulphonated polystyrene resin having a low percentage of cross linking. If desired the solution may be decolourised before the treatment with the resin by treatment with activated charcoal. The purified solution may be concentrated by evaporation after neutralising the free sulphuric acid. Lactic acid of 80% concentration thus obtained may be further purified by extraction with an aliphatic ether.
