Abstract

905,949. Liquid dispensers. O'NEILL, P. J. June 28, 1960 [Jan. 18, 1960], No. 22587/60. Class 102(2). A device for dispensing exact quantities of liquid, e.g., paint pigment, comprises an elongated cylinder 1, Fig. 1, open at one end 2 and closed at its other end by a screw-threaded cap 4 having a tubular nozzle 5. The cylinder 1 slidably mounts a piston 15 fitted with slidable rod 17 having an extension pin 18 passing sealingly through the piston and movable into and out of the bore 6 of the nozzle 5. The rod 17 has a transverse bore 22 fitted with a spring-loaded ball 24 engageable in an annular cam groove 25 in the piston to permit relative movement between the rod and piston. The piston and rod are moved by a sleeve 31 connected to the rod 17 by a bolt 30 and spacer 33 slidable in a cylinder slot 32. On inward movement of the sleeve from the position shown, the pin 18 is first extracted from the bore 6 so that the ball 24 moves rearwardly to engage the rear end 26 of the cam groove 25 when the pin is level with the face of the piston. On further inward movement both rod and piston move to permit filling of the cylinder. On outward movement of the sleeve both piston and rod at first move together until the piston abuts the cap 4, further outward movement removes the ball from the groove 25 whence the rod 17 continues to move so that the pin 18 clears the bore 6 to remove all the pigment. A fixed but adjustable stop 35 cooperates with the sleeve 31 and a graduated scale 47 to determine the amount of pigment to be discharged. The stop 35 comprises a set-screw 36 engageable in the cylinder slot 32 and a spring-loaded pin 38, Fig. 4, engageable with transverse " V " notches 44 in the cylinder, one for each graduation. Rotation of the stop with respect to the cylinder removes the pin 38 from its notch to permit longitudinal adjustment of the stop.
