Abstract
891,807. Assembling force fits. LAMSON & SESSIONS CO. Sept. 25, 1959 [Feb. 18, 1959], No. 32697/59. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXV] A bolt or the like 10, Fig. 1, comprises a shank 12 followed by a screwed portion 14, the shank having a plurality of knurl projections 21 extending radially therefrom and having a portion 16 of maximum outside diameter intermediate the ends, the diameter progressively decreasing therefrom to the entry and trailing ends of the shank. The projections, which may be formed by rolling between dies, each have a polygonal base 21a, Fig. 2, and a curved leading end 23 rising to a high point 24 and narrowing in width. The trailing end 28 is flat and slopes towards the leading end. When the bolt is driven or drawn into aligned holes in workpieces 17, 18 the knurls interfere with the hole walls and the tapered trailing end of the shank permits some mis-alignment of the holes.
