Class 123(2) A steam boiler composed of a number of small individual elements which can be easily replaced comprises three detachable water tube units 1, 2, 3 and an adjacent water-tube wall 41 of a firebox 4 the vertical tubes 11, 21, 31, 41 extending between upper and lower transverse headers such as 28, 27, Fig. 2, having dismountable flanged unions respectively with a steam and water drum 60 and a common inlet header 50. The latter is connected to the drum 60 by a downpipe 70 having a fresh water inlet 71. The firebox 4, in addition to the wall 41, comprises a rear wall 47, 48, a side wall 49, a roof, and an upper front wall part extending downwardly from a roof header to an intermediate horizontal header, the furnace being divided into two small individually-detachable elements by providing flanged unions between the headers for the wall parts 47, 48. The combustion gases follow a tortuous path formed by wall fillings 229 between the adjacent tubes of the wall units 1, 2, 3 and the wall 41 the fillings terminating alternately short of the upper and lower headers 28, 27 to provide gas passes 14, 24, 34, and 42 between the spaced water tubes the pass 14 leading to an outlet flue 43. The gaps in the side walls of the gas pass between the water tube units 1, 2, 3 and the wall 41 are closed by removable T-irons 25 and brick material 16 the corresponding roof spaces being closed by bars 5, 6 which are welded along the upper headers and have cover bars 9 placed over them. The boiler, supported on a foundation 8 having a fire-pit 4a and a sheet iron covering 8, has a shell 90 with a removable section facing the units 1, 2, 3 and a firebox door over the lower open part of the front wall of the firebox 4. In a modification four water tube units are provided the water tube walls of the firebox being formed as a single unit and the headers being of rectangular crosssection. In a further modification horizontal partitioning elements are arranged across the water tube units and the adjacent wall of the firebox so that a tortuous gas passage winds to- and-fro in a downward direction and terminates in a lower flue outlet. The water tube units and the firebox walls are all formed of two offset rows of water tubes.
