Abstract

891,154. Furnace electrodes. PECHINEY COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES. June 16, 1958 [June 18, 1957], No. 19216/58. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXXVI] A self-baking continuous carbon anode for a fused-bath electrolytic cell is formed by assembling a number of parts made from an unbaked paste of carbon particles and a binding material, the paste being such that the shapes of the parts are maintained without outside support both before and during baking. As shown, the anode 6 of a cell 1 is constituted by assembled individual unbaked blocks 4 having steel studs 5 as current conductors. The blocks may be of rectangular, hexagonal, or other section (Figs. 3 to 6, not shown). The paste preferably contains between 17% and 23% by weight of pitch, and the external side surfaces of the anode may be coated with powdered aluminium. The blocks may be made by pressing, extruding, vibrating, ramming, or by a combination of ramming and vibrating means, and the length of each block may be equal to the width of the finished anode.
