Abstract

899,812. Spinning yarns; roller arrangements in spinning &c. machines. BRITISH CELANESE Ltd. Oct. 20, 1960 [Oct. 21, 1959], No. 10821/60. Classes 120(2) and 120(3) In the manufacture of a fancy, cored yarn, two bundles of continuous filaments or yarns of natural or synthetic staple fibres are continuously fed to a turbulent fluid zone at two different speeds the higher of which is at least 50% greater than the lower, and each bundle is intermittently, randomly, and rapidly interchanged between the two speeds so that each bundle is overfed in turn with respect to the other, whereby the finished yarn is a cover yarn in which each bundle in turn and at random intervals covers the other. The bundles may be of different colours and/or denier and/or lustre and/or comprise filaments of varying denier and/or materials, e.g. viscose rayon and cellulose acetate and a third bundle which may be of different colour, denier and material, e.g. nylon or acrylic, from the others may be fed to the turbulent zone to provide a core yarn therefor. The final yarn may be cross-dyed to produce two- or three-colour effects and in all cases has surface loops and convolutions. In the apparatus shown, a bundle 1 of core filaments from a package 2 is passed at a constant speed by feed rollers 3 to an air jet 5 and, simultaneously therewith, bundles 6 and 13 of effect filaments are drawn from packages 7 and 14 and passed via guides 8 and 15 through nips formed by rollers 9 and 16 and steps 10 and 10a of a multi-stepped constant-speed pulley 11, thence at different speeds to a guide 4 and jet 5 in which the bundles are united to form composite yarn 17 collected on a cheese 18. A traverse rail 19 is displaced and returned at random intervals, by mechanical, electronic and/or pneumatic apparatus (not shown), to shift the bundle 13 between the position shown and the nip of roller 20 and step 10c of pulley 11 and the bundle 6 between the position shown and the nip of rollers 16 and step 10a in order to vary the sense of the speed differential between the travelling bundles. The bundle 1 may be omitted. The speeds of the bundles may be adjusted by use of replaceable end steps on pulley 11. Specifications 732,929, 793,044, 839,493, 871,798 and 899,811 are referred to.
