Abstract
899,187. Broaching. CROUCHER, A. H. Aug. 26, 1960 [Nov. 12, 1959], No. 38454/59. Class 83 (3). A metod of smoothing the joints of buttwelded rails 1 comprises gripping the rail and applying curved broaches 4-7 to parts of the joint. The broaches are moved in guides 8, 9, 10, 11 by pivoted cylinders 13, 15, within a framework which can be opened by cylinders 16 or locked in closed position by other cylinders 17. The rail is held by hydraulic grippers 18 actuated from an intensifier 21 and connected by equalizing links 22. Adjacent broach guides are urged apart by springs. The upper and lower pairs of broach guides are vertically adjustable by cylinders 23, 24 turning eccentrics 25-28, and are laterally adjustable by cylinders 31, 32 turning other eccentrics. The positions of the eccentrics are controlled by pairs of sensing fingers 37 mounted on the guides and acting on each side of the weld on the upper and lower flanges and on the two upright sides of the rail, a setting pointer 39 being provided. The fingers are connected to bell-crank levers 42, 43 to move a valve 44 controlling the associated eccentrics. The guides are thus set according to which finger most protrudes. The finger assemblies are each carried on a pivot 53 so that, as the broach passes the fingers, a roller 54 engages a ramp 55 on the broach and moves the fingers clear. When sensing and adjusting is complete, the guides are hydraulically locked. The sequence of operation is controlled by a manually rotated switch. The broaches may intermesh so that they machine over-lapping areas. In modifications, the frame is not openable and the hydraulic means are replaced by screw or other mechanical actuators.
