Abstract

899,169. Stuffing-box substitutes. WALKER & CO. Ltd., JAMES. Nov. 16, 1959 [Nov. 20, 1958], No. 37360/58. Class 122 (5). In a mechanical seal for a rotary shaft 5, a rotary sealing ring 2 is urged into facial sealing contacts with a fixed ring 1 by an annular bellows 3 expanded by pressure air therein. The bellows is connected at one end to a collar 4 adjustably fixed to the shaft by a set-screw 10 and at the other end to a carrier 9 for the carbon ring 2. Air under pressure is supplied to the interior of the bellows through a valvecontrolled inlet 6 and the facial sealing pressure may be varied by varying the air pressure by either pumping air into or releasing it from the bellows or by moving the collar 4 along the shaft.
