Abstract

896,514. Oil seals. EVANS, C. C. June 6, 1958 [March 8, 1957], No. 7788/57. Class 122 (5). In an oil seal comprising a resilient sealing element 102 having a sealing lip 104 urged against a shaft or other part to be sealed by a garter spring 108 housed in an annular groove 106, the spring is supported by a member 107 formed from flexible strip material and lying between the spring and the lip over the whole of the circumferential length of the spring. The element 102 is bonded to a rigid outer cup 101 and the flexible member 107 may have slots 109, Fig. 5, in its side walls. The member 107 may be of semi-circular or triangular cross-section or it may be formed as a flat strip or as a tube 47, Fig. 2, from which spaced portions 49 may be cut. The flexible member may be of a plastic material and its ends preferably overlap and/or interfit without being secured together.
