Abstract
An insulating oil comprises a substantially saturated hydrocarbon oil containing a minor amount of a ring-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon of the formula <FORM:0896066/III/1> where A is an aromatic nucleus, R1, R2 and R3 are alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radicals and n is an integer from 1 to 6, whereby the gassing and power factor characteristics of the oil are improved. Suitable additives include tert-butyl benzene, tert-amyl benzene, tert-butyl biphenyl, 2,2-diphenyl propane, 1,4-di(tert-butyl)benzene, b -tert-butyl naphthalene, 1-tert-butyl anthracene, 9-tert-butyl anthracene, hexaphenylethane, 1,1,1-triphenylethane, b -(triphenylmethyl)naphthalene, 9-triphenylmethyl-anthracene, and 1-phenyl-1,1-di(cyclohexyl)ethane. The compound may form from 0,5 to 30% by weight of the oil, which may be used for cables, transformers, capacitors, circuit-breakers, and bushings.
