Abstract
895,067. Rolling. DEUTSCHE EDELSTAHLWERKE A.G. Oct. 14, 1959 [Oct. 18, 1958], No. 34855/59. Class 83 (4). In order to prevent alloy steel, more particularly ferritic chromium steel, from sticking to the rolls during hot rolling, the pickled plate is immersed in an oxidizing bath to form a coating consisting mainly of Fe 2 O 3 . The bath preferably comprises caustic soda with about 10% sodium nitrate and should be in a molten state at about 400‹ C. Up to 0.5% borax may be added. In an example, a pickled plate of ferritic chromium steel containing 17% chromium was immersed for about ten minutes and a velvety brown film containing 70% Fe 2 O 3 was formed. This film could be spread by rubbing or rolling. The melt was allowed to drip off the plate which was then rinsed in water, heated to rolling temperature and rolled at about 400 ‹ C. The oxide film formed a parting layer between the rolls and the steel and was readily removable after rolling.
