Abstract
<PICT:1115673/C6-C7/1> An adherent and ductile Zn-Al coating containing 25-70% Al is applied to ferrous surfaces e.g. steel strip or wire by hot dipping in a bath containing Si or by roll bonding. As shown strip 1 is passed through an alkaline cleaning bath 4 past scrubbers 5 and rinsed in water 7 before being heated in a furnace 10. The strip passes through a hydrogen atmosphere in a holding chamber 12 to a molten bath 14 emerging through rollers 16 past cool air jets 17. The coated strip may be etched in amyl alcohol and HNO3. In roll bonding the steel surface is roughened by acid, covered with tridecyl alcohol and a mixture of Al and Zn powders then passed through pressure rollers and heated to 750 DEG F. The coating may contain Cr.
