Abstract
A heat-hardenable resinous material comprises an interpolymer of an acrylamide and at least two other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, one of which is an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, e.g. acrylic and metacrylic acids and monobutyl maleate, the interpolymer having amido hydrogen atoms replaced by the structure-ROR, wherein R is a saturated lower aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and R1 is hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical, the ethylenically unsaturated acid being used in an amount of from 8 to 30% of the interpolymer. Acrylamides specified are acrylamide itself and methacrylamide. Styrene is specified as a third copolymerizable monomer. The resinous material may be obtained by condensing the acrylamide interpolymer with an aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde, in the presence of an alkanol. The resinous materials are useful in coating applications, for which purpose they may be compounded with other materials, e.g. melamine and epoxy resins. In an Example (3) an acrylamide/methacrylic acid/styrene interpolymer is reacted with a butanol solution of formaldehyde and then formulated into a coating composition by admixture with toluene and an epoxy resin. The Specification gives details of the preparation of the acylamide interpolymers with the aid of specified solvents, catalysts and modifiers. Specification 826,652 also is referred to.
