Abstract

Polyethylene and polypropylene films are irradiated with ultra-violet light to an extent sufficient to reduce both the transverse and longitudinal elongations. The irradiation effects cross-linking of the polymer molecules of the film. The film may be pre-orientated, preferably longitudinally, so that the transverse elongation, before cross-linking, exceeds, and is preferably at least twice, the longitudinal elongation. Cross-linking may be effected in the presence of an activator sensitive to the ultra-violet radiation, e.g. a ketone, and the film may be impregnated with a solution of the activator (e.g. benzophenone in toluene) and dried prior to irradiation. Coloured films may be similarly treated. The treatment improves the tear properties of the film, especially ease and regularity of transverse tearing.
