Abstract
The invention comprises a process for the purification of 2-ethyl-cis-crotonoylurea which has been prepared by the dehydrohalogenation of carbromal with cadmium oxide which comprises contacting the hot dehydrohalogenation reaction mixture with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, cooling the reaction mixture to precipitate 2-ethyl-cis-crotonoylurea, slurrying the precipitate with an aqueous solution of acetic acid and filtering the slurry to obtain the desired product as a solid substantially free from residual cadmium ions. An example is given and the product is compared with the products of similar examples which omit the treatment with alkali hydroxide or replace this treatment by treatment with sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate or phosphoric acid and some of which also omit the treatment with acetic acid.
