Abstract
Nitro-olefines, other than a -nitro-isobutene, containing more than two carbon atoms are prepared by reacting the corresponding dinitroparaffins in which the nitrogroups are on adjacent carbon atoms, at least one of which is attached to a hydrogen atom, by reaction in the presence of water with a basic substance such as urea, and the oxides, hydroxides, and carbonates of the alkali metals, ammonium, alkaline earth metals, magnesium, lead and zinc. The dinitroparaffin is preferably used in comminuted form or in solution in a solvent. In the examples: (1) aqueous sodium hydroxide is reacted with 1 : 2-dinitro-propane in methanol. Polynitropropylene is precipitated on acidification; (2) 1 : 2-dinitro-2 : 4 : 4-tri-methyl pentane is reacted with aqueous sodium hydroxide giving 1-nitro-2 : 4 : 4-trimethyl-pentene-1; (3) 2 : 3-dinitro-butane is treated with potassium hydroxide to give 2-nitro-2-butene. Specifications 572,891, [Group XX], and 580,256 are referred to.
