887,273. Venting crank-chambers. ENFO ENTWICKLUNGSUND FORSCHUNGSA.G. Feb. 25, 1958 [Feb. 25, 1957], No. 6083/58. Class 7(2) [Also in Groups XXI and XXIX] A safety valve for preventing crank-case explosions of ships engines comprises a seating ring 4 attached to the crank-case and closed by a flat or profiled valve plate loaded by a spring 2 abutting a cover guard plate 3 attached to the seating ring by stay bolts 8 threaded into the crank-case or an assembly built up of two rings joined by radial walls. The construction allows of an unrestricted seat aperture around which a wire mesh flame trap may be placed; a similar trap may also be located at the valve inlet, i.e. in the crankcase. The seating rings 4 may be either welded to the crank-case or secured by the stay bolts 8 threaded into the crank-case and engaging a backing ring 4a; the stay bolts also act as guides for the valve plate 1. Oil catching' grooves or a guard may be provided in the seating ring.
