870,988. Rotary fuel burners. SOMMARIVA, G. B. Aug. 29, 1957 [Sept. 1, 1956], No. 27263/57. Class 75(1). [Also in 'Groups XII and XXVI] A liquid fuel burner comprises a rotary fuel atomizer 2 having radial fuel discharge ducts 45 and driven by primary air directed by stator blades 4 on to blades 43 on the atomizer. The atomizer is mounted on the end of a rotary hollow shaft 32 through which passes a stationary fuel pipe 26 having an outlet controlled by a needle valve 29. The fuel passes through apertures in the rotary shaft to an annular chamber Ch in the atomizer and thence through the ducts 45 to be discharged therefrom in a direction tangential to the atomizer blades 43. The primary air passes through orifices 3 in an annulus A to an annular chamber Ca and then to the stator blades 4. The burner is mounted at one end of a double walled combustion chamber 1 of tapering form connected to a turbine and surrounded by a heat exchanger comprising an inlet 12 and an outlet 15 for combustion products from the turbine and an inlet 16 for combustion air. The air is heated in the heat exchanger and part passes to the stator blades 4, another part passes through helical inlets 5 to the combustion chamber and the rest passes into the space between the double walls of the-combustion chamber. This latter air passes through three sets of apertures 7, 8, 9 into the combustion chamber to provide combustion and diluting air. The apertures 7, 8, 9 may be alternately inclined and perpendicular to the axis of the combustion chamber.
