Abstract

In a process for removing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide from a combustible gas, the gas is mixed with steam and passed at a temperature of between 400 DEG and 540 DEG C. over granules of calcined natural dolomite of a grain size 2-20 mm. in which the proportion by weight of calcium carbonate to magnesium carbonate before calcination is in the molecular ratio of one to at least one and at least some carbon dioxide has been expelled by calcination at a temperature of between 800 DEG and 950 DEG C., preferably between 820 DEG and 900 DEG C. The treatment may be carried out in two stages, the second stage serving to remove traces of carbon monoxide not removed in the first stage. When carbon monoxide begins to appear in quantity in the treated gas the calcined dolomite is regenerated by recalcination, care being taken that during regeneration the temperature of the material does not at any time fall below 400 DEG C. The process may be used for removing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide from gases containing hydrogen or olefinic hydrocarbons.ALSO:In a process for removing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide from a gas containing hydrogen, the gas is mixed with steam and passed at a temperature of between 400 DEG and 540 DEG C. over granules of calcined natural dolomite of a grain size 2-20 mm. in which the proportion by weight of calcium carbonate to magnesium carbonate before calcination is in the molecular ratio of one to at least one and from which at least some carbon dioxide has been expelled by calcination at a temperature of between 800 DEG and 950 DEG C., preferably between 820 DEG and 900 DEG C.
