Abstract
A sulphur dioxide acceptor comprising carbon, which has been used for the removal of sulphur dioxide from flue gases, is regenerated (with the formation of SO2 and/or H2S) with a reducing gas or gas mixture at a temperature of from 250 DEG to 700 DEG C., and preferably of from 300 DEG to 500 DEG C. The acceptor consists of products containing free carbon, for example charcoal, animal charcoal, various activated carbons, peat charcoal, lignite charcoal and coke. The regeneration is preferably carried out in the presence of steam, in particular the reducing gas mixture containing from 3 to 10% by weight of steam. The reducing gas or gas mixture is preferably a hydrocarbon or a gas mixture containing a hydrocarbon, in particular methane or a gas mixture containing methane, for example natural gas. Preferably, the acceptor is heated and simultaneously regenerated with a gas mixture obtained by oxidation of a reducing gas with less air than that required for complete combustion. The acceptor may be continuously withdrawn from the sulphur dioxide accepting zone, in which zone the gas or gas mixture is preferably preheated, and continuously regenerated, the regenerated acceptor being continuously recycled to the accepting zone. The acceptor may have been used for the removal of sulphur trioxide, in addition to sulphur dioxide, from the flue gases.
