Abstract

878,414. Cutting apparatus; treating edges of fabrics. HARRIMONDE Ltd. Feb. 20, 1959 [March 10, 1958], No. 14563/61. Divided out of 878,413. Classes 31 (1), 31 (2) and 42(1). Apparatus for forming a button-hole in fabric containing synthetic thermoplastic material in which fabric a button-hole has been stitched in outline comprises a knife 1 having a cutting edge 6 of button-hole shape formed with an eye 7 for cutting inside the stitched outline to form the hole, the knife being held in position in a block 2, and means for heating the knife so that as the fabric is cut only the edges of the fabric so formed are fused or partially fused. As shown, the knife is heated by electrical heating elements 3, 4; alternatively, the knife may be heated by other means, e.g. a gas flame or hot water or the knife itself may constitute the electric heating element. A cutting block is used to press the fabric on to the cutting edge of the knife, and the cutting block and the knife may be mounted at the ends of a pair of crossed levers which are moved pivotally with a scissors action. Molten portions of fabric cut by the eye 7 flow through a passage 20 in the knife and thence into an aperture 21 in the block 2.
