Abstract

1,238,847. Method of making briefs. COURTAULDS Ltd. 25 Oct., 1968 [26 Oct., 1967], No. 48738/67. Heading A3V. A process for the manufacture of briefs in succession, which includes women's panties and babies' pants, comprises cutting out from separate pieces of material 1 portions 11, 12 to form leg shape margins, fixing an elastic strip 13, 14 to each margin and to each of the opposite ends 5, 6 of each piece then with each elastic strip stretched the piece is folded and the edges of the overlying sides 22, 23 are joined. The piece 1, which may be cut from a roll or stacked in cut form, is made of a knitted, woven, or non-woven fabric formed from natural or synthetic fibres or mixtures thereof or a film of plastics or cellulosic material which is either plane or perforated or embossed to simulate textile fabrics, is brought between the two shaped plates 2 by a transporting plate (not shown) or by one of the plates 2 (by suction or by retractable pins. The elastic strips 5, 6 (step C) may be adhesively attached, or heat welded but are preferably sewn under tension by three or four thread stitching machines 7, 8 guided by a template and carrying cutters (not shown) immediately before the stitching needles. Similarly cutouts 11, 12 are edged with elastic strips 13, 14, under tension. Alternatively guillotine like knives may be used for cutting the material. Waste cut outs 11<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>1</SP> are drawn away by suction means in which the suction effect is adjustable. After severance the relaxed strips 5, 6, 13, 14 are moved apart by grippers 15 (step E) until puckering is removed. The piece 1 is then transferred to a frame 16 where pins 17 which may also be clamps, toothed bars or serrated bars, pierce the elastic strips through slots (18), Fig. 2 (not shown), formed in the grippers 15 which then slide away (step F) and the plates 2 are removed leaving the piece 1 in a tensioned state. The frame 16 is then folded abouts its hinge 20 and the folded piece 1 is then gripped between plates 21. The pins 17 are withdrawn and the overlying sides 22, 23 are overlock sewn by machines 26, 27, and the finished briefs 28 delivered to a receptacle 29 (step J). The process is performed continuously on successive fabric pieces. The fabric is preferably stretchable.
