Abstract
Synthetic resins are produced by reacting a polymer of phosphonitrilic chloride having at least 3 (PNCl2) units per molecule with at least sufficient arylmonohydroxy compound to react with all the chlorine of the phosphorus-containing polymer. When the reactants are used in stoichiometric amounts an inert high boiling solvent (such as the chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Aroclor") for the reactants and the products are added. Preferred arylhydroxy compounds are phenol and naphthol. In the Examples (1) phenol was refluxed with a phosphonitrilic chloride polymer at about 182 DEG C.; (2) is similar using b -naphthol. The resinous product could be cured by heating with butyl titanate and/or with benzoyl peroxide; (3) b -naphthol was condensed with phosphonitrilic chloride polymer in presence of "Aroclor" as an inert liquid reaction medium. The resin may be used for coating (e.g. by dipping) or laminating. A 50% solution in cyclohexanone makes an insulating varnish.
