Abstract

878,279. Roller bearings. SCHAEFFLER, W., and SCHAEFFLER, G., [trading as INDUSTRIEWERK SCHAEFFLER OHG.]. June 6, 1958 [June 13, 1957], No. 18248/58. Class 12 (1). A needle roller bearing has an outer race 1 formed at each end with a radial inwardlydirected rim 3 to which is bonded a lip packing 5. An annular packing member 6 secured to the housing 2 protects the lip packing 5 against coarse impurities. In a modification, an annular rim 10, Fig. 2, engages a circumferential rabbet 11 in an outer race 9, and a lip packing 15 is bonded to the outer face of the rim 10. Alternatively, a lip packing 27, Fig. 4, is bonded to the inner periphery of an annular rim 24. In another modification, an inner race 18, Fig. 3, is provided with radial outwardlydirected rims 20 to which packing washers 22 are bonded. In a further modification, needle rollers 30 are guided in a cage 31 which is located axially by balls 32 housed in apertures in the cage and engaging a groove 33 formed in the outer race 34. Packing 35 is bonded to one end face of the race 34 and packing 37 is bonded to the surface of the race 34 adjacent its opposite end.
