Abstract
An ammonium nitrate fertilizer composition is produced by adding a calcium sulphate plaster, either alone or in admixture with ammonium sulphate crystals, a molten concentrated aqueous solution of ammonium nitrate, preferably 83-95% by weight p concentrations, allowing the mass to cool and stand and comminuting the cooled mass. The added calcium sulphate plaster or admixture should be in amount at least sufficient to combine with the water in the ammonium nitrate solution. The final composition preferably contains 21% by weight of nitrogen. The molten solution containing the added ammonium sulphate and/or calcium sulphate plaster may be fed to a cooled metal surface to chill it. The granulated product is less prone to caking than is commercial ammonium nitrate.
