Abstract
In a method for the production of 1-(4-hydroxy-phenyl)-butanone-(3), phenol is reacted with methyl vinyl ketone in the presence of an acid alkylation catalyst at a temperature between -10 DEG C. and +50 DEG C. Acid catalysts specified include phosphoric and polyphosphoric acids and mixtures thereof, sulphuric acid, a mixture of sulphuric and phosphoric acid and a mixture of phosphoric and formic acids. Friedel-crafts catalysts, e.g. aluminium chloride and boron trifluoride may be added to the aforementioned acids. Examples are furnished. Specification 876,685 is referred to.
