Abstract

The reaction of phenol with a mixture of isomeric butenes to give 2,6-di-tert.-butylphenol (which may be mixed with 2-tert.-butylphenol), is effected at elevated temperature in presence of an Al phenoxide. The product may be reacted with phenol in presence of a p-alkylation catalyst to give 4-tert.-butylphenol which is free of sec.-butylphenols; the catalyst is, e.g., H3PO4, H2SO4, oleum, BF3, HCIO4, an ion-exchange resin, an arylsulphonic acid or an acid-activated earth.
