Abstract

876,191. Treating petroleum pitch; fuel briquettes. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. Feb. 29, 1960 [April 3, 1959], No. 7003/60. Classes 50 and 55 (2). A binder for briquetting small coal is prepared from a residue resulting from the distillation of petroleum or a product obtained by deasphalting such a residue by blowing the residue or the product obtained from such a residue with an oxygen-containing gas such as air at a temperature of at least 340‹ C. and preferably not above 400‹ C. The oxygen-containing gas may be mixed with an inert gas such as steam and the treatment is preferably carried out at atmospheric pressure. In an example a product obtained by treating a petroleum distillation residue with propane was blown at a temperature of 375‹ C. with a mixture of air and steam for a period of 510 minutes. The ratio by weight of air to steam was 1: 5 and the supply of air was 65 cm/hour/ton of product treated. The treated product had a Conradson Number of 39.6 and 7% of the treated product was used as a binder for small coal mixed with a small amount of anthracite.
