Abstract

A process for preparing a revalued or improved fuel, substantially free of ash, with low sulfur content, from carbonaceous fuel, characterized by (A) heating in a hydrogen atmosphere of at least 35 kilograms per square centimeter, a mixture which consists of a carbonaceous, finely divided fuel and an organic solvent having a boiling point in the range of 150-750º C, at a temperature in the range of 370-500º C: (B) keeping said mixture in said atmosphere at said temperature , until the relative viscosity of said mixture, increases first, to at least 10, and then drops below 10: (C) separating the resulting solution from the undissolved residue of said carbonaceous fuel, while the relative viscosity of said solution is less than 10; and (D) recovering the solvent having a boiling point in the range of 150-750º C, from said solution.
