Abstract
862,926. Valves. WOODROUSE & CO. Ltd. Jan. 21, 1959 [Jan. 31, 1058], No. 3234/58. Class 135. The body 1 of a manually-operated mixing- valve incorporates a central bore 5 connected to the hot-water supply that opens into an offset bore 20 which leads to a coaxial bore 3 of larger diameter and the upper end of which co-operates with a main closure-member 17 that carries a depending piston-member 16 embodying two reduced portions 15, 19, each of the latter being provided with a cross-bore 22, 23, respectively, interconnected by a passage 21 coaxial with the member 16. Cold water is admitted to the upper part of the bore 3 from an inlet 9 via annular passages 11, 12 and axial passages 13, 14. Initial unseating of the closure member 17 upon rotation of a handle 32 enables cold water only to pass from the bore 3 to an outlet 18 ; further lifting of the valve 17 starts to withdraw the portion 19 from bore 20 and hot water flows from the bore 5 to the outlet 18 via cross-bore 23, passage 21 and cross-bore 22. Continued lifting of the valve 17 increases the flow of hot water and gradually shuts off the cold water as the member 16 covers the end of the passage 4 where it enters the bore 3. The outlet 18 leads to a restrictor plate 27 in series with a rose 26. The valve 17 carries an " O "-ring 29 which grips the upper end of the portion 15 when the valve 17 is open and is compressed on to a chamfered seat at the top of the bore 3 when the valve is closed. The handle 32 operates the valve 17 by a spindle 33 having a quick-pitch thread such that one rotation moves the valve 17 from the open to the closed position; lugs may be provided to limit the rotation of the handle 32 and the latter may be fixed to the spindle 33 by a set-screw and splines, not shown. In a modification, the valve provides separate outlets 18 for the hot and cold water, which outlets are connected by separate pipes to the rose 26, the hot water pipe being inside the coldwater pipe and the rose having two sets of holes, each set corresponding with one of the pipes. The portion 15 is arranged above the closuremember 17.
