Abstract

862,217. Insulated pipes &c. F. A. (MEMBRANES) Ltd. April 8, 1959 [April 15, 1958], No. 11900/58. Class 99(2). Means for waterproofing and protecting insulated fluid containers, such as pipes and tanks, comprises a moisture-proof sheet enclosing and bonded to the insulating material on the container, and an outer layer formed from woven or welded wire mesh reinforced glass fibre material wrapped around and bonded to the sheet. The insulating material may be formed by a longitudinally divided, rigid tube of resinbonded glass fibres and an outer, moistureproof sheet of polyisobutylene bonded to the semi-cylindrical parts of the tube and forming a hinge connection adjacent one pair of longitudinal edges of those parts ; a longitudinal edge of the sheet is lapped over and bonded to the other edge of the sheet when the tube has been engaged around a pipe. The outer layer is wrapped about the moisture-proof sheet and bonded to the latter by molten bitumen or other thermoplastic material. Moisture seals are provided at intervals along the pipe by forming gaps in the insulating material and moisture-proof sheet, the exposed surface of the pipe being primed and the gaps filled with a thermoplastic moisture-proof substance.
