Abstract

1335055 Insulating pipes INDUSTRIELE ONDERNEMING WAVIN NV 3 Dec 1970 57412/70 Heading F2P A pipe unit comprising an inner metal tube 21, an intermediate foamed plastics heat insulating layer 22, and a fluid and vapour impervious plastics envelope 23, or a pipe-line consisting of a plurality of such units, has an opening in the envelope or between adjacent envelopes, filled by covering material 33 cooperating with the inner and outer surfaces of the marginal portions 23<SP>1</SP> of the envelope(s) surrounding the opening. A method of producing a fine line from such pipe units is also claimed. The marginal portions 23<SP>1</SP> of the envelope(s) may be bent, corrugated or contain holes to facilitate keying of the covering material. For the covering of two adjacent pipe units, the tube ends which extend beyond the insulating layers are welded together, and a mould is inserted between the envelope portions 23<SP>1</SP>. Heat insulating material 27 is then poured into the mould to fill the space between the existing insulating layers 22, and the mould is removed leaving a cavity below the inner surfaces of the envelopes 23. A two part mould 28 is then clamped around the envelope portions 23<SP>1</SP> and the covering material 33 is poured into the mould to cover the inner and outer end surfaces of the envelopes. The mould 28 may be removed or left in position. Clamping bands may be used to aid retention of the covering material 33. Where an end plug formed of covering material is inserted between adjacent pipe units, the remaining covering material 33 surrounds the plug as well as the envelope portions 23<SP>1</SP>. For an opening in the envelope of a single pipe unit Fig. 15, existing material of the insulating layer is removed just around the opening beneath the marginal portions of the envelope 23, a mould is clamped over the envelope as previously, and the covering material 40 is poured into the opening. An 0-ring 39 may surround the opening, embedded in the covering material 40 to aid sealing of the opening. Insulating layer materials are various thermosetting resins, natural resins, rubbers, other elastomeric materials with derivatives. Covering materials used, may be these materials with various additives for required resilience and/or shrinkage properties.
