Abstract
Compounds containing CH2=C< groups are polymerized in the presence of catalysts formed by reacting (a) a metal of sub-groups b of Group IV or V of the Periodic Table, or a hydride or organometallic compound of such a metal, (b) a halide of an element of sub-groups a of Group IV, V or VI of the Periodic Table, and (c) a halide of an element of Group III of the Periodic Table. The polymerization is carried out in a liquid aliphatic hydrocarbon dried with sulphuric acid and with sodium, under a pressure of 1 to 30 atmospheres at a temperature of 50 DEG to 100 DEG C., in a reactor dried under vacuum or by sweeping with dry and hot inert gases until the dew point of the gas leaving the reactor is below - 20 DEG C. In examples, ethylene is polymerized in the presence of a solvent using catalysts obtained from titanium tetrachloride, tin tetrabutyl, antimony and aluminium chloride. Lead tetraethyl and boron trifluoride are also mentioned as suitable materials for making the catalysts. Specification 799,392 is referred to.ALSO:Polymerization catalysts are formed by reacting (a) a metal of Sub-groups b of Group IV or V of the Periodic Table, or a hydride or organometallic compound of such a metal, (b) a halide of an element of Sub-groups a of Group IV, V or VI of the Periodic Table, and (c) a halide of an element of Group III of the Periodic Table. In examples, ethylene is polymerized using catalysts obtained from titanium tetrachloride, tin tetrabutyl, antimony, and aluminium chloride. Lead tetraethyl and boron trifluoride are also mentioned as suitable materials for making the catalysts. Specification 799,392 is referred to.
