Abstract
Normally gaseous mono - olefinic hydrocarbons, e.g. ethylene, polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising a mixture of an aluminium alkyl halide and a compound of a metal of sub-groups A of Groups IV to VI of the Periodic Table are reduced in ash content by treating first with steam and then simultaneously with a normally liquid aliphatic alcohol and hydrogen chloride, followed by neutralization. The polymers are prepared in a liquid reaction medium, e.g. a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon mixture, and are separated therefrom by the treatment with steam and are preferably in powder or granular form. The treatment with the alcohol which is preferably water-soluble, e.g. ethyl or isopropyl alcohol, may be at a temperature not above 100 DEG C., preferably between 60 DEG and 80 DEG C., in an extraction apparatus or a stirring vessel or in a circulating apparatus while a current of hydrogen chloride is introduced, or a mixture of alcohol or concentrated hydrochloric acid may be used. In an example, ethylene is poly merized below 80 DEG C. with an equimolecular mixture of a titanium tetrachloride and aluminium diethyl monochloride in a liquid reaction medium comprising an oxygen-free substantially saturated aliphatic C8-C10 hydrocarbon fraction. The polymer is filtered and treated with steam to yield a fine-grained product of a molecular weight of 65,000 which is treated with 96 or 50 per cent ethyl alcohol saturated with hydrogen chloride, or extracted with 96 per cent isopropyl alcohol in a Soxhlet apparatus into which hydrogen chloride is introduced. The products are washed with water and dried to yield products with ash contents of 0.01 and 0.02 per cent. Specifications 804,072 and 808,361 are referred to.
