869,017. Baling-machines. THIEBAUD, J. E. Sept. 11, 1957 [Nov. 26, 1956], No. 28686/57. Class 94(1). A " pick-up " baler comprises pivoted screens 5 which are swung upwardly into the baling chamber simultaneously with the movement of the tying needles I to protect the latter during their movement across the chamber to carry twine to knotters H. The straw or hay is fed into the feed channel D<SP>1</SP> of the machine by a front " pick-up " A and urged by a rotary member E into the baling chamber D where it is compressed against a preceding bale by a swinging ram G. The screens 5 are secured to a shaft 2 carrying a crank arm 3 which is coupled by a link 4 to a crank arm 1 carried by the needle shaft K. The screens penetrate and hold back the incoming straw so that the needles can rise without encountering undue resistance.
