Abstract

868,416. Printing on pile fabrics. C.S.C.M. Ltd. Nov. 1,1957 [Aug. 13, 1957], No. 29552/60. Divided out of 868,415. Class 100(2) Pile fabric is printed by passing it under a pressure roller which presses the pile face of the fabric downwardly against a printing surface on a roller, or endless belt, this surface comprising a number of receptacles each having a thin upstanding wall with free edges so that an area of the pile enters the receptacle and is separated from the remainder, and each receptacle before the pile is compressed into it is supplied with a controlled quantity of colouring agent. As shown in Fig. 1, carpeting 138 is fed with its pile downward over a roller 134 and beneath a pressure roller 139, the surface of the roller 134 comprising upstanding rubber walls defining colour receptacles. The printing roller 134 is partially immersed in a colour container 135, an adjustible doctor blade 137 scrapes off excess colour, and the walls of the receptacles are compressed by a resilient roller 140 before they enter the liquid colour to expel the air from the receptacles. In a modification, immediately after the walls of the receptacles have been compressed by a resilient roller, colour is poured into the receptacles on the roller from a nozzle, and a doctor blade scrapes off excess colour before the receptacles reach the carpeting. In Fig. 4 the printing roller is replaced by an endless belt 146, the colour receptacles provided on the belt being filled with colour from a container formed by a doctor blade 161 and an air-expelling roller 162. Colour is supplied from a pipe 159, and this may be removed when desired by a suction tube 160. The belt 146 is mounted on rollers 148, 149 and supported by a stand 147 and idler roller 157. The carpeting 150 is led from a roller 151, over a roller 152, under a pressure roller 153, and over a pin roller 154 to a take-up roller 155. After printing on the carpeting, the belt is sprayed with water from a pipe 164 in a washing chamber and then dried by air from a pipe 165, so that the receptacles are clean and ready to receive a new charge of different colouring agent if desired.
