Abstract

Liquid coating material entrained in air by the action of a doctor 4 on a coated web W supported on a roll 2 is withdrawn into a container comprising three superposed chambers 10, 12 and 14 separated by inclined baffles 16 and 18. Part of the entrained liquid material settles out in chambers 10 and 12 and is removed through an outlet 21 whilst the remainder is washed out in a liquid spray 24 which collects in a pan 34, the washed air being removed through an outlet 26. To accommodate different web supply angles to the support roll 2, a pivotable baffle 28 and wall 33 of adjustable height are provided in the upper chamber.
