Abstract
866,917. Lathes for turning non-rotating work. CALOW, T., [trading as CALOW & CO., TH.]. Aug. 23, 1957, No. 26744/57. Class 83 (3). A known machine for turning non- rotating tubular work with a rotating cutter head and having carriages 1 and 1<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, for drawing the work through the head 20 is provided with auxiliary gripping-devices comprising internal expanding mandrels 5, 51, which enable short lengths of tube 19 to be turned. The carriages are supported by rollers 21 running along rails 22 and the normal clamping means for the stock, comprising a handadjustable jaw 3, Fig. 2, is used to hold an auxiliary gripping-mandrel 5. The work 19, Fig. 1, is first held by the auxiliary gripping mandrel 5 at the left-hand end of the machine, fed partly through the head and picked up by a similar gripping mandrel 5<SP>1</SP> at the right-hand end which completes the feed movement. The operations may be automatic and interconnected with the carriage feed-means of the machine. Work-holders. The internal expanding mandrel 5 comprises three jaws 6 wedged outwardly by a cone-piece 10 integral with a draw-spindle 9. The opposite end of the latter is connected through toggle-links 12, 15, to a link 17 and transversely-operating piston 18.
