Abstract
Walls of tunnels, mineshafts, underground galleries and the like are sealed gas-tight by spraying a liquid coating composition on the surface of the walls and then allowing the coating so formed to dry, the dried coating being a gas-tight, flexible, non-toxic, flame-resistant and fireproof film which is strongly adherent to the walls, the liquid coating composition used being one which contains a constituent such that the dried coating derived therefrom is flame-resistant by its property of evolving a flame-resistant gas under the influence of an open flame. A suitable constituent of the said type is a chlorinated diphenyl resin. Examples of suitable coating compositions are (1) 68% solvent, 15% polyvinyl chloride or vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate co-polymer, 5% polystyrene, 2,1% chlorinated diphenyl resin, 3,1% dibutylphthalate, 1,2% titanium dioxide, 4,8% dioctyl phthalate, and 0,8% filler, the solvent being ethylene chloride or vinylidene chloride and the filler powdered aluminium, silica, mica, asbestos, aluminium silicate or alumina, and (2) 5 to 7% polyvinylidene chloride, 15 to 16% natural or synthetic rubber latex, 28 to 30% talc, 2% ethyl cellulose, 1% methyl cellulose, 5% xylol-formaldehyde resin, 1% chlorinated diphenyl resin, 0,5% aqueous ammonia, 0,4% emulsifier (fatty acid, lecithin, egg yolk, or soapy substances), 1,5% stabilizer (silicic acid, benzoic acid, tartaric acidl chalk or talc), and water to 100%. Metallic, sulphides and selenides containing oxides and traces of gold, silver or copper may be added to render the coated surfaces luminous.ALSO:Walls of tunnels, mineshafts, underground galleries and the like are sealed gas-tight by spraying a liquid coating composition on the surface of the walls and then allowing the coating so formed to dry, the dried coating being a gas-tight, flexible, non-toxic, flameresistant and fireproof film which is strongly adherent to the walls, the liquid coating composition used being one which contains a constituent such that the dried coating derived therefrom is flame-resistant by its property of evolving a flame-resistant gas under the influence of an open flame. A suitable constituent of the said type is a chlorinated diphenyl resin. Metallic sulphides and selenides containing oxides and traces of gold, silver or copper may be added to render the coated surfaces luminous.
