Abstract
An aqueous colloidal solution of melamineformaldehyde condensate is produced by adding formaldehyde to a colloid aqueous solution of a partially polymerized cationic melamine-formaldehyde having a pH of 0,5-5, and ageing the resulting mixture, e.g. for about 8 hours. The amount of formaldehyde added may vary from 1/2 to 15 mols per mol of combined melamine in the initial solution. In examples the initial solution is prepared by dissolving spray-dried trimethylolmelamine in water, adding 0,9 mol HCl per mol of melamine and ageing to permit the resin particles to grow to colloidal size. Acetic, formic, phosphoric or sulphurous acid may be employed in place of hydrochloric. A polyhydric alcohol or polyhydric alcohol ether may also be added in preparing the initial solution. An example is also given of the application of the invention to a cationic colloidal solution of a urea-melamine-formaldehyde resin. The "fortified" colloidal solutions of the invention give paper of higher web strength than corresponding solutions to which no formaldehyde has been added or to which formaldehyde has been added before the resin particles have attained colloidal dimensions.
