Abstract

<PICT:0865074/III/1> <PICT:0865074/III/2> Liquid mixtures are analysed by the "evaporation" method in which the weight is continually measured on a balance, the temperature of the escaping vapour measured by a thermocouple, and the rate of loss of weight calculated. In Fig. 2 the liquid mixture is contained in a stoppered vessel 58 in a metal dish 62 heated by an electric heater 63 situated at one side (to avoid buoyancy effects from rising hot air) and joined by a thermally-conducting member 64. The temperature of the issuing vapour is measured by the thermojunction 66. The metal dish can be inside the vessel instead of outside (Fig. 1, not shown). The main heating of the vessel is achieved by placing it in a furnace 14 (Fig. 3), and the auxiliary heating mentioned above serves to keep the evaporation temperature slightly above the ambient, to prevent overheating of the vapour. The vessel is attached to one arm of a balance 8 whose reading is detected photoelectrically or electromagnetically as in Specification 865,073 and displayed on a meter showing rate of change of weight. As in Specification 865,073 the meter readings are recorded on photographic paper 20 in the form of TG (weight), DTG (rate of change of weight) and T (temperature) curves, together with calibration marks. The DTA facilities are not used for the present invention.
