853,988. Feeding webs. HANDLEY, J. Sept. 19, 1958 [Sept. 28, 1957; Oct. 26, 1957], Nos. 30464/57 and 33464/57. Class 100(1) An apparatus for feeding tape in a step-bystep manner comprises two feed clamps, means for operating the two clamps alternately to grip the tape and move the tape when gripped in the desired direction, means to release the grip of each when returning it to initial position, means for holding the tape stationary during each return movement, an electrically operated relay for each feed clamp, and means for operating each relay to control whether the feed clamp is operative or inoperative to feed tape. Feed clamps 26, 27 are rocked by rollers 51, 52, engaging cams 30, 31 timed so that the clamps feed the tape, not shown, alternately. Tape gripping by anvils 32, 33 is effected by rocking arms such as 53, actuated through a roller 28 by a cam, not shown, co-operating with a spring 57. The roller 28 is prevented from engaging the cam at the appropriate time by the armature 54 of a relay 34. Upon energisation of the relay 34, the armature 54 is - actuated to permit the roller 28 to engage the cam, thereby causing tape feeding by the clamp 27. The clamps 26, 27 feed the tape by energising their associated relays alternately so as to grip the tape alternately. The tape is prevented from moving in the reverse direction by a spring loaded pawl 35 the lower end 48 of which engages the tape. In a modification, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) the tape is fed by a single clamp operating in the same manner as in the previous embodiment, the tape being held against movement in the reverse direction by a similar but stationary clamp which grips the tape on the reverse non-feeding stroke of the other clamp.
