Abstract

The invention comprises alkyl esters of aromatic tetracarboxylic acids having 3-20 carbon atoms per alkyl group. The esters may be partial or full esters of mellophanic, pyromellitic or prehnitic acid and primary, secondary or tertiary alkanols. They may be prepared by refluxing the acid and alkanol together, in the presence, if desired, of a water-entraining agent (e.g. heptane or toluene) or an esterification catalyst (e.g. sodium bisulphate, sulphuric acid, toluene sulphonic acid, sodium methylate or calcium oxide). In the examples, (a) tetra(C8 oxo alkyl) pyromellitate is prepared by refluxing the oxo alcohol and pyromellitic acid in the presence of heptane and sodium hydrogen sulphate, (b) di (C8 oxo alkyl) pyromellitate is prepared by refluxing together the oxo alcohol and pyromellitic di-anhydride, (c) tetra (C8, C10 or C13 oxo alkyl or amyl) pyromellitates are prepared by refluxing together the alcohol and pyromellitic di-anhydride, p-toluene sulphonic acid being employed as esterification catalyst in preparing the amyl ester, and sodium hydrogen sulphate being employed as the catalyst in the case of the oxo alcohol esters, and (d) mono (C8 oxo alkyl) pyromellitate is prepared by refluxing together the oxo alcohol and pyromellitic di-anhydride.ALSO:A lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an ester derived from a C3-C20 alkanol and an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid. The lubricating oil may be mineral or synthetic or a mixture of both. Synthetic oils mentioned are dialkyl esters of alkane dicarboxylic acids, alkyl esters of moncarboxylic esters, polyglycols and their esters, complex esters, phosphate, sulphite or carbonate esters, halocarbon oils, silicone oils and formals. The ester of an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid may be a partial or full ester, and may be derived from mellophanic, pyromellitic or prehnitic acid. The lubricating oil composition may also contain detergents (e.g. calcium petroleum sulphonate), oxidation inhibitors (e.g. phenyl alpha naphthylamine or phenothiazine), corrosion inhibitors (e.g. sorbitan mono-oleate), pour point depressants, dyes, grease thickeners or load-carrying agents. In the examples, lubricating compositions are described consisting of (a) mineral oil and tetra-amyl or tetra (C8 oxoalkyl) pyromellitate, (b) di (C8 and C10 oxo alkyl) adipates, phenothiazine and di (C8 oxo alkyl) pyromellitate, and (c) di (C8 oxo alkyl) azelate, a complex ester (derived from polyethylene glycol 200, C8 oxo alcohol and adipic acid), dimethyl silicone oil, tricresyl phosphate, phenothiazine, an antifoaming agent and mono (C8 oxo alkyl) pyromellitate. Some of the esters of the aromatic tetracarboxylic acids may be used as lubricating oils per se, and a lubricating composition is described consisting of tetra (C8 oxo alkyl) pyromellitate and phenothiazine.
