Abstract

<PICT:0850132/III/1> Apparatus for transferring a sample of a fluid flowing in a pipe 8 to a pipe 12 in which eluting gas flows to a gas chromatography column 13 comprises an apertured plunger 1 slidable in a tube 2 interconnecting the two pipes. When the plunger is at one end of the tube, the diagonal passage 7 connects pipe 3 to a pipe 9 but, when the plunger is moved to the other end of the tube by a handle 4 or by electric, hydraulic or pneumatic means, the passage connects the pipe 12 through a by-pass 15 with a pipe 11 and the sample contained in the passage is injected by the gas stream into the column 13. The tube 2 and the plunger are made of quartz ground on the interior and exterior surfaces respectively and their relative rotation is prevented by a rib 5 and groove 6. A stopcock 10 is fitted in the pipe 8.
