1,179,459. Sample-injection apparatus for gas chromatography. BODENSEEWERK PERKIN-ELMER & CO. G.m.b.H. 21 June, 1967 [24 June, 1966], No. 28707/67. Heading B1L. Sample injection apparatus for use with a gas chromatographic column comprises a conduit, including a valve, extending from a carrier gas source to the inlet connection of the column and a second conduit for the sample extending from the inlet to a cannula for insertion through a self-sealing diaphragm on a sample container. In use, the cannula is inserted through the diaphragm with the carrier gas flowing through it so that a pressure is built up in the sample container. The valve is then closed and sample is forced up the cannula into the column. The valve is then opened and the flow of sample is interrupted and the cannula withdrawn. The continued flow of gas through the cannula ensures that it is swept clean for the next sample. To lessen the loss of carrier gas, a changeover cock may be used to connect the inlet to atmosphere via a throttle and the cannula direct to the carrier gas conduit via a throttle. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 5, the cannula 50 may be carried by piston 52 about which is fitted a cylinder 54, the interior of which communicates with the atmosphere through a throttle tube 72. To inject a sample, the sample container 20 is raised to push the cylinder 54 upwardly against the action of a spring 70 so that the cannula 50 pierces a self-sealing diaphragm 60 at the end of the cylinder and the self-sealing diaphragm 22 on the sample container.
