Abstract
859,803. Drawing wire. MARSHALL RICHARDS MACHINE CO. Ltd. June 11, 1959, No. 19991/59. Class 83 (4). In a wire-drawing machine of the kind comprising a pair of spaced rotatable drawing drums about which the wire to be drawn is passed backwards and forwards in a plurality of runs and at least one of which drums comprises at least two portions rotatable at different peripheral velocities and in which there are at least two wire-drawing dies between the drums acting on at least two runs of wire, the axes of rotation of the two drums are inclined to one another so that the wire drawn from each die is in substantial alignment with the wire entering the die. The axes of rotation 43, 34 of the stepped drawing drums 1, 2, respectively, of a wire-drawing machine are inclined at an angle of approximately 5 degrees so that the runs of wire leaving the dies 7-12, e.g. the length of wire 58 under considerable tension run on to the drums at an angle of 90 degrees to the drum axis while at the same time maintaining alignment with the run of wire entering the die, e.g. the length of wire 60. This arrangement is said to reduce wear on the dies. In order to prevent grooving of the drums the dies 7-12 may be adjustable as a set axially of the shaft 34. The angle of inclination of the drum axis may vary in accordance with the distance apart of the drums and the relative position of the dies. The drums rotate in opposite directions, the runs of wire crossing between the drums or alternatively the drums may rotate in the same direction when the wire does not cross. After leaving the drum 2 the wire passes over guidepulleys 13, 14 and over further stepped drums 3, 4 with axes 42, 39 relatively inclined at 5 degrees and through dies 16-13. From the drum 4 the wire is drawn through a finishing die 24 by a drum 25 and is then coiled on a bobbin 28 using a traversing pulley 27. A motor 30 drives the drums 2, 4 and 25 and the bobbin 28 through chain and sprocket gearing while the inclined shafts 42, 43 are driven through further chain-and-sprocket gearing and inclined spurgears 40, 41.
