Abstract

A method of adjusting the taper applied by a grinding wheel to a work-piece mounted between spaced supports comprises the application of a controlled force to one of the supports to distort it and thereby to set the orientation of the work-piece axis in a horizontal plane relatively to that of the grinding wheel. The tailstock of the machine comprises a main body 2 with an arm 11 arranged laterally of a support 10 which is designedly weaker than the arm 11. A ram 5 is hydraulically operated to move the support 10 in either direction and thus to incline the axis of the work slightly towards or away from that of the grinding wheel, or the support may be pre-stressed, the stressing being relieved when the work axis is shifted. In a modified form the ram 5 may be rounded at its outer end so that it bears only in an outward direction on the support 10. The taper adjustment may be automatically controlled by a valve 9 responsive to suitably amplified signals from gauges arranged to transmit the diameter differential between the opposite ends of the work-piece.
