Abstract
An aluminium plate which may be smooth or grained as by sandblasting is prepared for reception of a light-sensitive coating by application of an alkali metal silicate solution and then treating the siliceous layer so formed with a water-soluble organic acid. Example I describes successive treatments with solutions of (a) phosphoric acid, (b) sodium hydroxide, pyrophosphate and tripolyphosphate, (c) chromic acid for desmutting, (d) sodium silicate, with a water rinse after each treatment, and then with aqueous citric acid, followed by hydroquinone as antioxidant. Example II replaces the citric acid with tartaric acid. Specifications 764,442 and 764,443 are referred to.
